Seriously, though; Houston is a great place and by the time you get down there, the weather should be really nice.
I don't think you can avoid a stop in Houston and visits to Enron, Halliburton, KBR, ExxonMobil, etc.
- I believe Matthew Mullenweg (http://www.photomatt.net), creator of WordPress, lives in Houston so you may be able to catch an interview.
- Kinky Friedman (http://www.kinkyfriedman.com/) is running an interesting campaign for governor here in Texas. He has a strong environmental platform. You could also try to meet up with the Democrat running for governer here, Chris Bell (http://www.chrisbell.com/). I think either should try to make time for a journalist travelling cross-country on an environmental crusade.
- The Pacifica radio affliate in Houston, KPFT (http://www.kpft.org), could help you organize an event. They are very progressive. You could at least record a PSA for them.
- We have a nice inner-city arboretum (http://www.houstonarboretum.org/) where we have some great naturalists for you to meet. I'm trying to introduce them to the idea of video blogging or putting their video training resources on-line using something like FireAnt.
- Some cool folk art in the downtown area: the Flower Man's House (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/TXHOUflowerman.html) and the Orange Show (http://www.orangeshow.org/). Both feature inspiring stories of common folk working for public good, with some potential health/environmental messages. And, if wacky's your thing, you can't miss the Art Car Museum (http://www.artcarmuseum.com/). Come to Houston, Amanda!
- The Park People (http://www.parkpeople.org/) advocate for green space here in Houston, the sprawling fourth-largest city in the United States.
- The Houston Ship Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston_Ship_Channel) is gigantic. There's a free ferryboat tour (http://www.portofhouston.com/samhou/samhou.html) Tuesday through Sunday, once or twice a day. Or, if you'd like more greenery and fewer depressing vistas, try a canoe trip down Buffalo Bayou (http://www.buffalobayou.org/buffbayoucanoe.html) -- you'd never think you were in the middle of a big city!
- The Beer Can House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_Can_House), Art Car Museum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Car_Museum), and other sites that can be found on Road Show America - Houston are worth a trip to Houston each on their own.
